Located in a handweaving studio just outside of Brighton, The Modern Tapestry Co. bridges the gap between traditional craft and the modern home. We believe that personal memories deserve to be art. Our work is centred on integrating ancient, tactile craft into contemporary living spaces. Using traditional weaving looms, we take your treasured photographs, crafting them into custom cloth tapestries that capture the ethereal, intangible essence of your family memories. By turning photographs into texture, our focus is on creating new, contemporary artworks that bring warmth, history, and artistry into your everyday space. How We Began
The Modern Tapestry Co. was born from a desire to capture what photography alone cannot: the soft, ethereal, and beautifully intangible qualities of memory. Having worked for years as traditional tapestry handweavers, we loved the ancient craft but found that traditional methods simply weren't commercially viable in the modern world. Refusing to let the art form fade, we spent time reimagining the craft, developing our own signature method to translate digital photographs into handwoven art. We wanted to create something entirely new for the contemporary home—a deeply personal piece of fine craft that doesn't just decorate a room, but celebrates each individual’s unique history, life story, and major milestones.
The Process
Every piece begins with a conversation and a photograph, but the true magic happens at the loom. Transforming a flat digital image into a rich, tactile tapestry is a slow, deliberate process. Piece by piece, row by row, your family’s memories are quite literally interwoven with the warp and weft. There are no automated machines or hurried shortcuts here, only the rhythmic, precise movement of hands working the threads. This dedicated pace allows us to weave genuine care into every centimetre of cloth, ensuring that the final tapestry isn't just a replica of a photo, but a soulful, completely unique piece of handmade craft.
